Lending Boxes

The Lending Boxes program was developed to support families after they have completed existing Centre for Family Literacy programs and as an alternative when families do not meet the criteria for a specific program.

Each Lending Box contains 25 – 30 books that are left with partnering agencies for four weeks. By having these books available in a setting that is familiar and comfortable for them, the families are more apt to borrow the books and learn how to access community resources such as the public library.

The program:

  • Working with the partner agency, a Family Literacy Facilitator chooses books with the specific group in mind
  • A Facilitator spends a few hours a month talking with the participants about the “whys” and “hows” of reading with their children
  • Participants borrow age and stage appropriate books to take home (for a week) and share with their children
  • Within a group setting, participants share strategies, questions and concerns about reading with their children
  • Participants are shown how to choose books and make sure that books are not misplaced or lost
The Benefits:

  • Parents understand the importance of shared reading
  • Families have books in their homes
  • Families read together
  • Children gain early language and literacy skills

Lending Boxes is funded by:
Rotary Club of Edmonton
