Family Literacy Regional Network

In October 2006, the Centre conducted a study to determine the needs and parameters for the development of an Alberta family literacy regional system. The results of this study determined that Family Literacy Practitioners wanted to be able to connect more regularly with others in their region, and they wanted ongoing training and program support on a regional level.

To support these needs the Centre piloted a Family Literacy Regional Network (FLRN) in three areas of Alberta – Northwest, Central and Southeast. Three Regional Coordinators were contracted to provide training and support in each region and an Aboriginal Family Literacy Coordinator was contracted to work closely with the regions to provide on-going support to Aboriginal programs in Alberta.

The Centre for Family Literacy is pleased to announce that we are supporting seven FLRN regions which will encompass all of the Family Literacy Initiative Fund Projects currently funded through the Alberta Government. Seven Regional Coordinators have been contracted to provide training and support in each region: Holly Handfield (Northwest), Jodi Rasmusson (Northeast), Wendy Peverett (North Central), Donna Arnold (South Central), Nada Jerkovic (Southwest), Celena Gerl (Southeast) and Colleen Crozier (Aboriginal). Coordinators were chosen for their considerable background in family literacy, education, completion of Foundational Training, and training/facilitation experience. The Regional Coordinators have already begun preliminary work. The responsibilities of the Regional Coordinators are to:

  • Serve as the community/region contact for anyone looking for information on family literacy and family literacy awareness activities

  • Provide on-going support, advice and act as a resource to Family Literacy Initiative Fund (FLIF) program coordinators in their designated region

  • Organize and facilitate regional program models trainings events and/or Introduction to Family Literacy trainings (and other professional development/training sessions as time permits)

  • Coordinate regional family literacy program meetings or networking sessions and when possible provide links between organizations delivering family literacy programs/agencies
or those wishing to do so.
