Alberta Advanced Education's Parent-Child Literacy Strategy was developed to strengthen adult literacy skills of parents/caregivers, to enhance the early oral language development of their pre-school children, to support and foster the involvement of parents in their children's learning, and to enhance community-based partnerships that support the development of language and literacy skills of families.
The Strategy includes initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of family literacy, training in family literacy and support for family literacy programs across the province.
As part of this strategy, the Centre for Family Literacy has undertaken the following activities since 2001:
- Delivered Foundational Training in Family Literacy sessions (both face-to-face and online)
- Delivered Family Literacy Training Institutes to family literacy practitioners in Alberta
- Delivered Train-the-Trainer workshops for Books for Babies, Rhymes That Bind and Introduction to Family Literacy to develop the beginnings of a regional training system
- Delivered workshops in family literacy to program staff of the Alberta Children’s Services’ Home Visitation program
- Researched alternate delivery methods for training
- Developed various training resources including training manuals, videos and a rhymes CD-ROM
- Collaborated with Community Programs to offer annual “Food for Thought” professional development events for family literacy facilitators, coordinators and administrators

- Developed awareness and promotion materials for family literacy programs across the province including brochures, posters and CD-ROMs
- Supported development of a strategy to raise awareness of family literacy across sectors such as Health, Social Services, Children’s Services, Adult Basic Education, Aboriginal Affairs and Justice
- Developed a “Literacy Awareness” manual for training community partners
- Created and distributed family literacy tip sheets and pamphlets and made them available as downloads on the Centre’s website
- Delivered awareness workshops to Library personnel and at a variety of conferences in related non-literacy sectors

- In consultation with Alberta practitioners, developed and distributed a “Good Practice Statements” brochure and specific Good Practice statements for Books for Babies, Rhymes That Bind and Books Offer Our Kids Success
- Produced and distributed over 350 “Family Literacy: Growing and Learning Together” information kits and videos
- Supported existing family literacy programs through information, resources and referrals
- Developed an online provincial training calendar available on the Centre’s website with a link to submit training opportunities

- Delivered workshops in Evaluation Methods
- Collaborated with Community Programs to plan and deliver two Family Literacy Think Tanks for key stakeholders to help direct the future of family literacy
