We had the pleasure of interviewing some of our adult learners about the impact of our Tutor Program. This month we are featuring Idile, a mother of three young children who first experienced the Centre for Family Literacy through the C.O.W. Bus family program, a year before the pandemic began. Since then, she attended multiple online family programs and adult group classes. She started in our Adult Tutor Program in 2021, and was nominated for the Lois Hole Memorial Literacy Award in in 2022.
Find out what motivates Idile, and what advice she has for others who struggle with their reading, writing, or math.
Q: What can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Idile and I am a stay home mom and I have three kids.
Q: Why did you contact the Centre for Family Literacy?
I contact the Centre because I wanted to improve my reading and my writing and my vocabulary as well.
Q: Why was it important for you to get help?
As a mom, my kids started going to school so they need help with writing and reading, and in order for me to help I have to improve myself. And the other thing is in the future I’m planning to go back to school.
Q: How important is the Tutor Program to you?
It is very important to me because since the start until today I can see improvement in the way I write and the way I read so it helped me a lot. It improved me and my self confidence as well.
Q: Do you have any advice for other adults who need help with literacy skills?
I would advise them to join because, first of all it’s free and it helps us a lot, especially if we need to improve our speaking skills, our writing skills, our reading skills and math as well. If you’re a parent and you want to help your children it is a good place to start with tutoring and if you want to go back to school, that as well is a good place to start with tutoring.
Q: What do you want to say about your tutor and the Centre for Family Literacy’s programs?
I like my tutor, she is very kind and she is very patient with me and I believe all the tutors have that patience and that kindness as well. The program at the Centre, I really love the Centre, because it helps my kids through the family program and I do take as well the Book Club for reading.
I would advise any family or any parent who wants to improve, especially if you are new to the country, I believe it will help.
If you would like to spread the word about our adult programs to help others like Idile, feel free to share her video interview!
Idile spoke with Centre for Family Literacy staff via Zoom in December, 2021. Thank you Idile for sharing your story and inspiring others on their literacy journey.
