Named after the Honourable Dr. Lois Hole, a passionate advocate for literacy in Alberta, these awards recognize outstanding contributions to literacy by individuals, families, organizations, or businesses. This year, we had the honour of being joined by Lois Hole’s son, Jim Hole, who presented the awards to the winners. Join us in celebrating the remarkable achievements of this year’s winners.
Community Leadership Award Winner – Grande Prairie Aboriginal Head Start Program
Since its establishment in 1965, the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Head Start program has been a beacon of hope in the field of family literacy and Indigenous community support. By bridging cultural divides and removing barriers faced by the Indigenous community, they prioritize food security and literacy, empowering parents as primary educators. Certified to deliver the Seeds of Empathy program, they foster empathy and literacy skills while extending learning opportunities through their Family Literacy Bags program. Moreover, as a hub for Indigenous and Early Learning Communities, their mentorship and advocacy initiatives influence literacy programs across Alberta and beyond.
Adult Learner Award – Senait Tesfatsion
Senait Tesfatsion’s journey from Eritrea to Canada is a testament to resilience and determination. Despite facing the challenge of learning a new language without a formal education, Senait’s commitment to her family’s future led her to enroll in LINC classes. Through dedication and perseverance, she progressed to LINC 4 and actively engages in CFL sessions, demonstrating enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to improve. Furthermore, Senait’s aspiration to obtain a Class 5 driver’s license reflects her ongoing pursuit of personal and educational growth, inspiring others with her journey of empowerment.
Family Learner Award – Tejdeep Kaur
Tejdeep Kaur’s unwavering commitment to her son Harmann’s development embodies the transformative power of family literacy. Seeking support from the Centre for Family Literacy’s COW Corner program, Tej overcame challenges to provide positive experiences for Harmann, who struggled with speech delay and social anxiety. Through Tej’s perseverance and the support of CFL programs, Harmann’s progress has been remarkable, demonstrating increased confidence and enthusiasm for learning. Additionally, Tej’s advocacy for family literacy serves as a source of inspiration for families navigating similar challenges, highlighting the importance of community support in every child’s learning journey.
By honouring the achievements of these exceptional individuals and organizations, the Lois Hole Memorial Literacy Awards reaffirm our commitment to promoting literacy and empowering communities across Alberta. Join us in celebrating their dedication and contributions to creating a brighter future through literacy.
